What are main types of Ball Valve

2025-05-19

Ball valves are commonly used in fluid control systems for their durability and reliable sealing. There are several main types of ball valves, classified by design, port type, number of pieces, and function. Here's a breakdown:

1. Based on Body Construction:

a. One-Piece Ball Valve

Single body casting.

Not serviceable (cannot be disassembled easily).

Economical and leak-proof.

Used in low-cost applications.

b. Two-Piece Ball Valve

Two pieces bolted or threaded together.

Allows limited maintenance (can be taken apart for cleaning or repairs).

Common in many industrial applications.

c. Three-Piece Ball Valve

Three separate parts (two end caps and one central body).

Easily disassembled and cleaned.

Ideal for systems requiring regular maintenance.

2. Based on Ball Port Design:

a. Full Port (Full Bore)

Bore diameter is equal to the pipeline diameter.

No flow restriction.

Used where minimal pressure drop is critical.

b. Reduced Port (Standard Bore)

Bore is smaller than pipeline diameter.

Some flow restriction.

Cost-effective, used in many general applications.

c. V-Port Ball Valve

Ball has a V-shaped cut.

Allows precise flow control.

Used in throttling applications.

3. Based on Number of Ports:

a. Two-Way Ball Valve

One inlet, one outlet.

Simple on/off control.

b. Three-Way Ball Valve (T-Port or L-Port)

Three connections.

Can mix, divert, or isolate flow.

T-Port allows mixing or diverting flow.

L-Port allows flow between two ports only.

c. Four-Way Ball Valve

Less common.

Used for more complex flow switching or directional control.

4. Based on Operation:

a. Manual Ball Valve

Operated by a handle or lever.

Suitable for simple on/off service.

b. Actuated Ball Valve

Operated by electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuator.

Used in automated systems.

5. Based on Special Features:

a. Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

Ball is supported by bearings or trunnions.

Suitable for high-pressure applications.

b. Floating Ball Valve

Ball is held in place by seats, allowing slight movement.

Common in low to medium pressure systems.
